Katy Digovich had 16 points and 12 rebounds as Princeton just fell short of a Dartmouth upset, losing to the Big Green 63-56 at Leede Arena. The Tigers used a late 8-0 run to surge out of a 12-point halftime deficit but Dartmouth answered with a run of its own to remain undefeated (4-0) in the Ivy League.
Princeton drops to 5-12 overall and 2-2 in the Ivy League while Dartmouth improves to 11-6 overall and remains tied with Penn for first in the Ivies.
The Tigers played evenly with the Big Green from their first possession through the next 18 minutes when there were three ties and six lead changes. Princeton won the tap and scored off the bat with a high-low pass from Casey Lockwood to Becky Brown. Jeannie Cullen, an 85% free-throw shooter, immediately tied the score with two foul shots and then hit a three-pointer to give Dartmouth its first five points. The Tigers answered with two free-throws by Katy O'Brien and a steal and a layup by Lockwood off the Princeton full-court press.
Six Tigers and six Dartmouth players scored in the first 10 minutes as both defenses prevented any single player or team from dominating. A three and a layup by Ali Smith tied the score 15-15 at the 12-minute mark, and a jumper at 11:17 by Lauren Nestor off the bench gave Princeton a 17-15 lead at 11:17.
Dartmouth then went on a 17-2 run in the next nine minutes, putting the Big Green ahead 33-19 with two minutes remaining. Over half of those Dartmouth points came from the foul line where the Big Green leads the Ivy League in shooting percentage (79.6%). Princeton went cold and finished the first half shooting just 29% from the field, including 1-for-9 shooting from long range. Dartmouth led 35-23 at the break.
Cullen led all first-half scorers with 10 points and Fatima Kamara came off the bench to hit five free throws. The Tigers held Dartmouth's leading scorer Elise Morrison (18.0 points per game) to just two points.
Smith and Brown had seven and six points for Princeton while Digovich added four points and eight rebounds. The teams were even on the boards with 21 rebounds apiece.
Princeton slowly dug out of its 12-point halftime deficit and finally cracked Dartmouth's double-digit lead with seven straight points from Brown. A free throw by Nestor and a Digovich three put Princeton within one (50-49) with 6:37 left in the game.
The Tigers' 8-0 run ended with a Ashley Taylor free throw but Digovich hit another jumper to tie the game (51-51) at 5:58 for the first time since 12:00 in the first half. Dartmouth turned to its go-to players, Morrison and Cullen, for an 8-0 scoring spree of its own before Lockwood broke the run with a three-point play at 2:42. The Big Green finished ahead 63-56.
Digovich complemented her first career double-double with two assists and three blocks while Brown added 15 points and five boards. Lockwood was one point and one rebound shy of her third straight double-double, finishing with nine points, nine rebounds and three assists.
Cullen and Taylor had 16 points each while Morrison added 10. Princeton outscored Dartmouth 33-28 in the second half when it shot 46% from the floor and 43% behind the arc.
The Tigers face Harvard in Boston tomorrow, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. The Crimson (8-9, 1-3) lost to Penn today, 73-72 in overtime.
