Maura Gallagher and Elizabeth Pillion scored early and the rest of the 11th-ranked Princeton women's soccer team scored often.
Gallagher and Pillion scored goals 25 seconds apart early in the first half and Princeton's offense erupted for its second-highest goal total in the last 14 seasons as the Tigers ran past American 7-1 at Lourie-Love Field Tuesday night.
The win was the sixth straight for the Tigers as they improved to 10-1 and reached double figures in wins for the sixth straight season and seventh time in eight years. American, in the thick of the Patriot League race, lost for just the third time in 14 games and fell to 10-3-1.
Princeton also improved on its school record for longest home winning streak with its 12th straight. "It was a good night for us," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford, who used 26 players in the game. "We were very crisp offensively. We got off to a good start and things just went from there."
Princeton's seven goals were the most since a 9-0 win over Lehigh in 1999 and the second-highest total since the 1990 season.
Gallagher started the scoring after a long pass from Romy Trigg-Smith at the 11:44 mark, and Elizabeth Pillion made it 2-0 25 seconds later. American answered seven minutes later when Marcela Rucipero headed in Annette Scott's free kick for her 11th goal of the season. It was American's first shot of the night.
Princeton, on the other hand, reached 14 shots by halftime, and Janine Willis cashed one of those in the 31st minute to make it 3-1 at intermission.
It would be all Princeton after intermission, as Esmeralda Negron scored 1:44 into the second half to continue the run. Gallagher then added her second of the night, and Amanda Ferranti and Maija Garnaas both scored the first goal of their careers.
Negron finished with one goal and three assists, bringing her Ivy League-leading totals to seven goals, six assists and 20 points on the season. She also moved closer to Linda DeBoer's 20-year-old school records with her 34th goal and 81st points, leaving her seven goals and 13 points shy. Also, the three assists moved her into a tie for fourth place all-time at Princeton with Gallagher and Krista Ariss '02 with 13 career assists.
Princeton outshot American 25-5 in defeating the Eagles for the fourth time in four meetings.
Princeton returns to Ivy League play Saturday morning at Columbia. Princeton and Penn are tied for first in the league at 3-0-0.
