TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Austin Smith placed 25th overall in a time of 24:32.4 over the 8,000-meter Indiana State University course to lead the Princeton men's cross country team to a 20th-place finish in the "White" race at the Pre-National Invitational Saturday.
The race is a prelude to the NCAA cross country championship meet, which takes place at the same ISU course Nov. 24.
Smith, Princeton's top runner in every race this year, was actually quite close to the lead despite finishing in 25th. His time was less than 40 seconds behind race winner Ryan Hall of Stanford and less than 25 seconds behind a top-ten finish.
Frank McCreery also had a strong performance for Princeton, finishing 67th overall in 25:01. Paul Rosa (111th), James Flannery (134th) and Ben Stern (146th) also scored for the Tigers.
Stanford won the meet, sweeping both the men's and women's races at the event. The Cardinal took three of the top 10 places and finished with 77 points, outdistancing second-place Notre Dame by an impressive 88 points.
Princeton finished ahead of such schools as Tennessee, Virginia, Missouri and Illinois.
