NEW YORK, N.Y. - In a race where at least one runner from all eight schools finished in the top 11 overall, Columbia outdueled Dartmouth and Penn near the top to take the 2004 Ivy League Heptagonal Men's Cross Country championship Friday morning at Van Cortlandt Park.
The Lions did not have a top five finisher but placed five runners in the top 21, including Gerry Groothuis' seventh-place effort. Columbia finished with 70 points, edging the Big Green (79) and the Quakers (87) for the team title.
Cornell's Bruce Hyde won the individual title, finishing the course in 24:35.5, four seconds better than Yale's Lucas Meyer.
Princeton placed sixth in the event, though the Tigers were just eight points away from a fourth-place finish. Junior Frank Macreery was a top 10 finisher, placing eighth in 25:01.1, while senior Austin Smith finished 13th in 25:13.1. Sophomore Paul Rosa (28th) and two impressive freshmen, David Nightengale (33rd) and Tim O'Neill (34th), gave the Tigers five runners in the top 35 overall.
Brown finished fourth overall with 108 points, while Yale had 114 and the Tigers 116. Cornell (145) and Harvard (180) rounded out the standings.
Brown's Jeff Gaudette, Yale's Casey Moriarty and Penn's Dusty Lieb rounded out the top five finishers individually.
