CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - When the Princeton women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Cornell last weekend, it lost control of its own destiny in the Ivy League race. Thanks to a pair of results hundreds of miles apart, that has changed.
Princeton completed a season sweep of Harvard with a 3-1 win over the Crimson Friday night. Harvard took the opener 30-23, but the Tigers came out swinging after that and won the final three games 30-27, 30-23 and 30-21. At the same time, Yale swept Cornell 3-0 to set up the most exciting final week of the Ivy League race.
Harvard and Cornell are both 9-4 in the league, while Princeton and Yale are 8-4. The Crimson will clinch at least a share of the title with a win Saturday over Penn, while Cornell can do the same with a win over Brown. Yale will need a win Saturday at Columbia and then Wednesday against Brown, and the Tigers will need to win at Dartmouth and then at home against Penn on Wednesday.
Harvard could have eliminated Princeton from the league race Friday night, but the Tigers rallied from an early hole to pull off the victory. Junior Lauren Grumet led Princeton with 22 kills, while seniors Ashley Weber, Alex Brown and Lauren Loban combined for 38 kills together. Setter Jenny Senske had 57 assists, while libero Jenny McReynolds had 30 digs.
The win was No. 501 for Glenn Nelson, who became the third coach in Princeton history with 500 wins last weekend.
