Princeton has been selected as the host site for this coming weekend's NCAA women's soccer quarterfinal game between the Tigers and the University of Washington. The game will be played Friday night at 7 at Lourie-Love Field.
Princeton (18-2), the seventh-seed in the tournament, and Washington (17-4-1), the 15th seed, have never met. They also have no common opponents this season.
About the only common denominator between the schools is that neither has allowed a goal in the NCAA tournament. Washington defeated Birmingham-Southern 5-0 and Auburn 1-0 in the first two rounds at Auburn and then defeated Maryland 1-0 Saturday in the Sweet 16. In fact, the Huskies have shut out their last five opponents, this after a stretch that saw them allow 11 goals in the four games before that.
Princeton, the winner of 18 straight home games, has been home since the tournament began. The Tigers defeated Central Connecticut 5-0 in the first round, Villanova 1-0 in double overtime in the second round and Boston College 2-0 Saturday in the Sweet 16. Princeton has outshot its three NCAA opponents by a combined 71-9.
The winner of the Princeton-Washington game will advance to the Final Four in Cary, N.C., hosted by North Carolina State. The other quarterfinal game on Princeton's side of the bracket will have 14th-seeded UCLA travel to sixth-seeded Ohio State. UCLA is coached by Jillian Ellis, a college teammate of Princeton coach Julie Shackford's at William & Mary.
The other side of the bracket will have 16th-seed Santa Clara hosting unseeded Illinois after Santa Clara eliminated top-seeded North Carolina, and the winner of that game will take on the winner of the game between fifth-seeded Portland and fourth-seeded Notre Dame, to be played at Notre Dame.
Princeton is the only Eastern team remaining in the tournament.
