Princeton, N.J. - Yale's Deena Caplette scored early in the third period to lift the Bulldogs to a 2-1 win over the Princeton women's hockey team Wednesday night at Baker Rink. Princeton scored the game's first goal, but a pair of Yale power-play goals gave the Bulldogs the win.
After a scoreless first period that saw Princeton outshoot Yale 13-9, the Tigers finally broke through and scored at 9:08 of the second period. Junior Chrissie Norwich took a shot from the point that Yale goaltender Sarah Love saved, but sophomore Kim Pearce found the rebound and slid it by Love. Sophomore Laura Watt also assisted on Pearce's fifth goal of the season, and her first since scoring four goals in Princeton's opener at Providence. The goal came during a 4 on 4. The lead lasted for just under four minutes when Yale evened up the score on Helen Resor's first goal of the season. Caplette won an offensive-zone draw back to Resor, who fired a slap shot that found its way through traffic and past Princeton junior goaltender Roxanne Gaudiel.
Yale then broke the 1-1 tie in the third period on Caplette's second of the season. Caplette took advantage of a broken play in the Princeton zone and beat Gaudiel with a wrist shot as she slid across the crease. Erin Duggan and Jenna Spring assisted on the goal.
Yale's penalty killing played a key role in the game as the Bulldogs killed off eight penalties and three 5 on 3 situations. Yale was 2 for 4 on the power play.
Love made 32 saves for the Bulldogs for her fifth win of the season while Gaudiel fell to 4-4-1 and made 25 saves.
Princeton returns to action on Saturday when Connecticut visits Baker Rink for the first game of a two-game series at 1 p.m.
