Box Score
The Princeton volleyball team certainly tried to come back after a slow start against Cornell Saturday at Dillon Gym but, in the end, both the hitting and the blocking of the Big Red was too much for the Tigers to handle.
Elizabeth Bishop had a match-high 30 kills and a team-high 23 digs and Cornell had 20 team blocks, including eight from Katie Rademacher, as the Big Red defeated the Tigers, 3-1, in a key match atop the Ivy League standings.
Game scores were 30-25, 30-21, 29-31 and 30-25.
With the win, the Big Red (17-7, 9-3 Ivy) took a one-game lead in the loss column over the Tigers (16-7, 7-4 Ivy) in the league standings. 9-2 Harvard played at Yale today in another key match among the league leaders.
The Big Red came out firing early on, taking a 9-4 lead in Game 1 and cruising to a 30-25 win thanks to a .419 hitting percentage. In Game 2, Cornell's blocking took over, as the Tigers hit -.047 for the game and fell behind two games to none. Princeton looked like it was destined for a three-game defeat, but the Tigers came from four points down late in the game to come from behind for a 31-29 victory. Princeton trailed 26-22 but then scored four straight points to tie the match.
Cornell then took as much as a seven-point lead in the fourth game, 23-16, and held on for a 30-25 victory.
Lauren Grumet led the Tigers with 17 kills, but Princeton committed 34 errors thanks to tremendous blocking from the Big Red. Cornell had 38 assisted blocks, including 15 from Rademacher and seven from setter Whitney Fair.
Jenny McReynolds had a match-high 35 digs for the Tigers, who had earlier lost to the Big Red by the same 3-1 score in Ithaca two weeks ago.
Still mathematically alive for a league title, Princeton plays at Harvard and Dartmouth next weekend.
