Negron, Matheson Named First-Team All-America
December 10, 2004 | Women's Soccer
Dec. 10, 2004
Esmeralda Negron and Diana Matheson, the keystones of Princeton's run to the NCAA Final Four in women's soccer, were both named adidas/NSCAA first-team All-Americas, it was announced Friday.
Negron and Matheson become the second and third players in Princeton history and 10th and 11th players in Ivy League history to be named first-team All-America. Their selection comes 24 years after Nena Odim was a first-team All-America for the Tigers in 1980, the first year of varsity women's soccer at Princeton.
Negron, a senior from Harrington Park, N.J., set Princeton single-season records with 20 goals, 12 assists and 52 points while earning her second-straight Ivy League Player of the Year Award and third first-team All-Ivy honor. She will graduate as Princeton's career leader with 47 goals and 111 points, and she is second all-time in assists at Princeton with 17. She had four career overtime goals, including one this season in a 2-1 win over Harvard. Matheson, a freshman from Oakville, Ont., was the Ivy League Rookie of the Year and, like Negron, a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection. She becomes the third freshman in three years to be a first-team All-America after a season in which she scored seven goals and had seven assists while emerging as the field general for the Tigers.
Princeton went 19-3 while becoming the first Ivy League school ever to reach the Final Four. Princeton was a perfect 7-0 in the Ivy League.
Tiger head coach Julie Shackford was named Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year and is one of six finalists for national honors.
