Liz Keady had an unassisted first-period goal and assisted on Kim Pearce's power-play insurance goal early in the second period as the Princeton women's hockey team defeated Cornell, 2-0, in an ECAC Hockey League game played at Baker Rink Saturday afternoon.
Princeton (7-4-2, 3-3-1 ECACHL), which also got 15 saves from Roxanne Gaudiel for her fourth shutout of the season, including her third straight, outshot the Big Red (3-6-1, 3-5-0 ECACHL) 15-3 in the first period, taking the lead midway through the period. Keady scored her third goal of the year on a nice one-on-one move through the Cornell defense, beating Flora Vineberg with a wrist shot. Cornell hung on in the second period and trailed by just one goal after two, but a two-player disadvantage proved costly for the Big Red as the third period began. Pearce's seventh goal of the season came with the Tigers one player up, thanks to an original pass from the point by Laura Watt and a nice feed from Keady.
Vineberg had 35 saves to help keep the Big Red in the game before leaving for an empty net with 41 seconds left in the third period.
Princeton outshot Cornell 37-15, including 28-10 in the first and third periods combined. Each team had six power-play opportunities, but Pearce's early third-period goal was the only power-play goal of the game.
Princeton travels to Boston next weekend, playing Northeastern on Saturday and Boston College on Sunday in its final games before the New Year. The Tigers have played nine of their first 13 games at home, but won't play a home game now until they host Clarkson in early February.
