Brown's Big Game Dominates Big Red

Princeton, N.J. - Becky Brown scored a season-high 25 points off 12-for-18 shooting to lead Princeton past Cornell 74-67 in Jadwin Gym. Katy O'Brien added 15 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals as the Tigers improved to 3-3 in the Ivy League and the Big Red dropped to 3-4.
Princeton led by as many as 19 points in the second half but not without a challenge from the Big Red for most of the game. Cornell was ahead 8-4 after the first five minutes when Princeton's second-leading scorer Casey Lockwood left with a knee injury and would not return.
The Big Red scored once more for its biggest lead of the half at 13:47 but strong post play and the help of Elyse Umeda off the bench propelled the Tigers. Umeda sliced through the lane for a layup as the shot clock expired to put Princeton within two, 12-10 at 9:50. Brown and McCracken both scored on high-low post passes from each other on consecutive trips down the court, putting Princeton ahead 14-12 at 8:35. It was the Tigers first lead since the opening possession.
Katie Romey single-handedly kept Cornell ahead in the next two minutes with back-to-back threes before Princeton went on a 10-0 run at 6:40, making the score 27-20 with four minutes to play. Brown shot 6 for 8 from the floor for 12 first-half points while Katy O'Brien and Umeda handled the three-point arc. O'Brien hit 3 of 4 from long range and Umeda nailed one three and finished the half with eight points. The Tigers entered the break with their biggest lead of the game, 37-28.
Princeton shot 59.3% from the field while Cornell shot 45.8% overall and 67% behind the arc. The Tigers outrebounded the Big Red 13-11 and both teams had seven turnovers.
Princeton continued its run in the opening minutes of the first half when Brown scored the first nine points for her team. After consecutive three-pointers by Katy Digovich, the Tigers were ahead 55-36 with 11:28 remaining and Cornell was in too deep.
Brown finished the game shooting 67% from the floor for her season-high 25 points while adding eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Digovich had 10 points and five rebounds and Umeda had a career-high 10 points and three assists.
The Tigers shot 54% from the floor and 47% from long range while holding the Big Red to 44% overall shooting. Princeton had 14 turnovers to 19 assists although Cornell had 34 rebounds to just 29 by the Tigers.
Romey led Cornell with 19 points including 3-for-3 shooting behind the arc.
Princeton hosts Columbia tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. following an interactive fair to celebrate National Girls and Women In Sports Day.
