Women's Hoops Falls To Columbia 60-56 In OT

Princeton, N.J. - Becky Brown had 22 points and nine rebounds as Princeton lost its first overtime game of the season 60-56 to Columbia at Jadwin Gym. A crowd of 2,988 watched the Tigers battle through 95 minutes of basketball following Princeton's National Girls and Women In Sports Day celebration. It was the second-largest attendance at a women's game in Jadwin, improving on last year's mark of 2,972 at the annual event.
Princeton fell to 6-14 overall and 3-4 in the Ivy League while the Lions improved to 10-10 overall and 4-4 in conference play. The Tigers have not defeated Columbia under head coach Richard Barron, losing eight of the last nine meetings.
The game was a tight one from the start as both teams came out sluggish and cold. The largest lead of the first half was six points by Princeton at 4:50 but Columbia entered the break with the edge, 23-22. Both teams shot just 30% from the floor, under 30% behind the arc and under 50% from the foul line. Brown finished the half with eight points and four boards while Ali Smith had five points and five rebounds. Edytte Key led Columbia with seven points and four rebounds.
Katy Digovich put the Tigers back ahead with a jumper to open the second half and Princeton held that lead until the final seconds of regulation. Brown scored 12 second-half points to give the Tigers an eight-point lead at 5:17 before the Lions rallied.
Sue Altman scored eight of Columbia's final 10 points, including the game-tying three-pointer off an out-of-bounds play with 20 seconds to play. Princeton could not score on its final possession, sending the game into overtime at 48-48.
There were four ties and two lead changes in the five minutes of overtime but Columbia outscored Princeton 12-8. Digovich scored six of Princeton's final eight points.
Princeton finished the game shooting 37% from the field, 20% from long range and just 41% from the foul line. Columbia was also cold, shooting just 34% from the field and 21% behind the arc. Columbia had 50 rebounds to Princeton's 46 and 12 turnovers to 13 by the Tigers.
Digovich had 15 points, five rebounds and four assists while Smith added eight points and nine boards, all on the defensive end. Altman led the Lions with 16 points and seven rebounds and Edytte Key had 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Tigers return to action next weekend when they visit Yale and Brown.
