Box Score
New Haven, Conn. - Becky Brown scored a season-high 28 points and Katy Digovich had 16 points and 12 rebounds in a 59-56 overtime loss to Yale at the John H. Lee Amphitheater. Princeton never led in the first 36 minutes but outscored the Bulldogs 34-22 in the second half to force the extra period.
Yale's Brynn Gingras, who finished with 15 points, hit the game-winning shot to break a 56-56 tie with 10 seconds remaining. Princeton could not get off a shot in the final 1:16 of overtime.
The Tigers fell to 6-15 overall and 3-5 in the Ivy League while Yale improved to 5-17 and 2-7.
Gingras opened the night's scoring when she drew a foul in the paint and hit both free throws for a quick 2-0 Yale lead. Digovich matched that with a jumper before the Tigers went cold, shooting just 26% from the floor and connecting on just one of four three-pointers. Gingras and Julie Cohen scored Yale's first 12 points, all off threes and free throws, for a 12-4 Bulldog lead at 15:03. Digovich, Brown and Lauren Nestor helped Princeton get within four (16-12) at 9:20 but it was all Yale from then on. Morgan Richards and Bonnie Smith each scored six points off the bench to put Princeton in a 25-12 hole at 6:02. Yale led 30-18 at the half.
The Bulldogs hit 5 of 9 nine three-point attempts and out-rebounded the Tigers 22 to 13. Digovich led Princeton at the break with nine points and five rebounds while Brown added six points. Five players had six points apiece for Yale.
Princeton started off right in the second half, scoring on its first possession and shutting down the Bulldogs for the first two minutes. A three-point play by Ali Smith and three straight layups by Brown put Princeton within one (36-35) at 12:34.
The Tigers finally tied the score 39-39 off a Katy O'Brien drive at 8:05 and took their first lead of the game when Brown made a three-point play at 4:06. Brown hit two more pairs of free-throws the next two time down the court and Princeton led 50-49 with just under three minutes remaining.
With both teams in the bonus, Cohen hit one of two foul shots to tie the score at 1:18. Bonnie Smith drew a foul on the defensive boards and hit both ends of a one-and-one to give Yale a 52-50 lead with 0:24 left. But O'Brien quickly found Nestor open for a short jumper to send the game into overtime.
Digovich hit two shots in the paint but a three and free throw by Richards kept the score tied 56-56 into the final minute of the extra period. A Princeton turnover with 30 seconds to play gave the Bulldogs possession, and Gingras hit an open wing shot for the Yale lead at 0:10. Gingras sealed the win with a free throw before time expired.
The Tigers were without starter Casey Lockwood (10.8 ppg, 7.9 rpg) and used freshman Elyse Umeda in her first career start. They shot just 36% from the field, 29% from long range and 63% on the foul line.
Princeton visits Brown (11-10, 4-4) tomorrow, Saturday Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. The Tigers defeated the Bears 66-53 in their first meeting this year.
