PRINCETON - Sarah Butsch scored twice, including the game winner in the first period, to lead the Princeton women's hockey team to a 4-1 win over Cornell Friday night at Baker Rink. Butsch scored the winning goal at 9:51 of the first to give the Tigers a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Cornell opened the game on the attack, owning control of the first few minutes. The effort was rewarded with a quick lead, as Lara Kelly's shot from the point fluttered off her stick and found Maryann Nowak next to the Princeton goal. As Tiger goalie Megan Van Beusekom turned to find the puck, Nowak found an opening and glided the puck into the goal. The Big Red nearly made it 2-0 on a point-blank shot by Vicki Hodgkinson, but Van Beusekom made a sprawling save. The save seemed to ignite the Tiger offense, and Princeton evened the score a couple minutes later. Gretchen Anderson sent a pass across the ice to Heather Jackson, who found the top right corner of the goal at the 6:47 mark.
Butsch took over from there, scoring the game winner from a pass by Laura Watt. Another centering opportunity, Butsch beat freshman goalie Beth Baronick, who ended the game with an impressive 37 saves. Butsch scored again in the second period, the lone goal of that stanza, on a shot from just below the blue line. The shot caught the inside of the left post and lit the lamp for a 3-1 lead.
Lisa Rasmussen put the game away in the third period with a score at the 14:38 mark, off assists from Dina McCumber and Sarah Greer.
Van Beusekom ended the game with 13 saves. Princeton will face Colgate Saturday at 4 p.m.
