Field Hockey Hits the Road for Weekend in the Nutmeg State

The Princeton field hockey team hopes to continue one streak and end another when it faces Yale in the Ivy opener for both teams Saturday afternoon (noon) at Johnson Field in New Haven, Conn.
The good streak currently stands at 31--consecutive victories for Princeton in Ivy League play dating back to a loss at Brown in October 1999. The bad streak is certainly a lot shorter--2--consecutive losses to start the season, but that's the first time that's happened for the Tigers since 1992.
Yale (1-1), which defeated Sacred Heart and lost to Holy Cross last weekend, certainly gave the Ivy champion Tigers their biggest scare of the league season in 2003. The Bulldogs trailed 3-0 early in the second half and 4-2 with five minutes left in the game, but scored twice in the final four minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime. Princeton's Natalie Martirosian would win the game for the Tigers 4:12 into overtime.
Princeton hasn't lost to the Bulldogs since 1977 and has never lost at Yale (13-0-2). The Tigers have a 26-2-3 overall record in the series.
The Tigers then renew what has become a spirited series with Connecticut Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.) at the Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs. The teams have played nine times in the last eight seasons, with Princeton winning five of those nine games.
Last season, at Class of 1952 Stadium, the Tigers dominated UConn statistically but ended up on the short end of a 2-1 result. Princeton outshot the Huskies 23-11 and had 19 penalty corners in the game.
UConn entered a Friday night game against Vermont with a 4-0 record, including a 3-1 victory over Penn State Sept. 4.
Princeton returns home next weekend, facing Maryland at 6 p.m. Friday (Sept. 17) before hosting Dartmouth the next day at 3 p.m. The Maryland-Princeton game will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by College Sports Television (CSTV).
