It's a weekend of non-conference games for the Princeton field hockey team, which hopes to earn its first home victories of the season against Boston University (Friday, 4 p.m.) and Richmond (Sunday, 11 a.m.).
The Tigers (2-6) played a rare midweek game Tuesday night and fashioned an outstanding performance at Penn State, but came up on the short end of a 1-0 score when Karin Grap scored for the Nittany Lions late in overtime. Juliana Simon, who has played every minute of every game in goal this season for the Tigers, had eight saves for Princeton in that game.
The Terriers (5-3), receiving votes in this week's NFHCA rankings, haven't played since last Saturday, when they defeated Dartmouth 4-1 for their fourth straight win. Pam Spuehler and Jen Joyce each scored twice in that game for Boston University.
Richmond (7-2) is ranked No. 12 in that NFHCA poll, and those two losses have come to ranked teams. The Spiders last played on Sunday, defeating James Madison by a 2-0 score. Princeton defeated Boston University 5-1 in Massachusetts last season and has eight wins in 10 games all-time against the Terriers. The Tigers and Richmond are playing for the first time since the 1997 season.
Pulling Rank The Tigers return home for their final non-league home games of the season, against Boston University and Richmond. Princeton's final three home games this year are Ivy League games against Brown, Harvard and Penn.
Recently... Princeton lost a heartbreaker at Penn State Tuesday night, falling 1-0 in overtime when Karin Grap scored with 3:15 left in the period. Juliana Simon had eight saves for the Tigers in the game.
In the Ivies... Princeton defeated Columbia last Friday, 3-1, thanks to second-half goals from Lizzie Black and Alexis Martiriosian. The Tigers improved to 8-0 all-time against the Lions and moved to 2-1 in Ivy League play.
More Ivies... Dartmouth and Harvard (2-0) were the only undefeated teams in league play entering this week. Every other team has at least one league loss.
Last Year... Princeton defeated Boston University last season, 5-1, behind two goals from Ashley Sennett and two assists from Lizzie Black. The Tigers did not allow the Terriers a shot in the second half.
A Few Years Ago... Princeton is 3-0 all-time against Richmond. The teams have not played since the 1997 season, when the Tigers earned a 5-1 victory.
Spreading it Around Eight different players have scored Princeton's 12 goals this season. Lauren Ehrlichman leads the Tigers with three goals, while Hillary Schmidt and Alexis Martirosian have two apiece.
Terrier Tales Boston University (5-3) has won four straight entering Friday night's game, including a 4-1 victory over Dartmouth last Saturday. Pam Spuehler and Jen Joyce each scored twice for the Terriers. BU plays Rutgers here at Class of 1952 Stadium Sunday in a neutral-site game.
Spider Shorts Richmond, ranked No. 12 in the latest NFHCA poll, is 7-2 on the season, with those two losses coming to ranked teams in Old Dominion and American. Allie Howard and Holly Cram scored goals for the Spiders on penalty-corner situations last Sunday in a 2-0 Richmond win over James Madison.
