Princeton, N.J. - On Friday night, the Princeton field hockey team outshot and out chanced Hofstra, but could not take advantage of those opportunities in a 3-0 defeat. Tonight the Tigers will hope to make good on their chances when they visit second-ranked Maryland as Princeton looks to climb back to the .500 mark.
Princeton (5-6, 4-0 Ivy) has dropped its last two games, after winning three straight prior to that. In the two losses, Princeton has outshot both opponents and had more penalty corner chances. In the two games Princeton has taken 35 shots, but only two goals to show for it, in losses to Villanova and Hofstra.
Princeton is 4-0 in the Ivy League and will resume its league schedule on Saturday after a two-week hiatus, when the Tigers visit Brown. Princeton's 4-0 league record is tops in the Ivies, with Cornell (4-1) second and Brown (2-1) third. The other five schools all have at least two losses. In other midweek Ivy action tonight and tomorrow: Cornell hosts Bucknell, Brown visits Boston College, and Penn hosts Monmouth.
Princeton is 4-9-1 all-time against Maryland and is 2-5-1 in games played in College Park, Md. The Terps have won six straight games in the series, including a 7-1 win in Princeton last fall.
Maryland is 13-1 overall and 3-1 in the ACC. The Terps are ranked second in the nation, with their only loss coming to top-ranked Wake Forest in penalty strokes, and enter the game on a three-game win streak after defeating No. 3 Duke on Saturday.
Maryland and Penn have not had any common opponents yet this season. Maryland has faced both Harvard and Penn, but they are two of the three remaining Ivy schools on the schedule for Princeton.
The Tigers continue a four-game stretch of games away from home over the weekend when they travel to Brown on Saturday and No. 19 Boston University on Sunday.
