Ferrell Finishes Third, Leads Tigers to 7th-Place Finish at Pre-Nationals
October 15, 2005 | Women's Cross Country
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Just a few weeks ago, Princeton senior Cack Ferrell went home to Minnesota and finished third in a strong field at the Griak Invitational. Saturday in Indiana, Ferrell repeated the feat against what might have been even stronger competition.
Ferrell finished the 6,000 meters at the Lavern Gibson championship course in 20:24.3, placing third overall, in leading the women's cross country team to a 7th-place finish in the "White" race at the 2005 Pre-Nationals meet hosted by Indiana State University.
The race takes place on the same course as the NCAA championship meet next month, and Ferrell certainly made herself one of the favorites in that race with Saturday's performance.
Ferrell was tied halfway through the race with eventual race winner Christine Bolf of Colorado, Annie Bersagel of Wake Forest and Alyson Kohlmeier of Michigan (10:07 at the 3K split). Bolf's winning time was 20:12.3, while Bersagel finished second in 20:15.6.
The Tigers also had three other runners finish among the top 61 in the race on the way to their 7th-place finish (260 points). Catha Mullen was an impressive 32nd in 21:18, while Mia Swenson placed 45th in 21:32.1. Jolee van Leuven was 61st in 21:42.3.
Jen Johnson was Princeton's other scorer in the meet, finishing 119th in 22:22.
Dartmouth also ran in the "White" race, placing 19th overall, while Columbia, Harvard and Yale ran in the "Blue" race a few minutes earlier. Ferrell's time also would have been a top 10 finish in the "Blue" race.
