BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Princeton didn't just qualify Saturday afternoon for the NCAA championship meet in women's cross country; the Tigers qualified in winning and dominating fashion.
Cack Ferrell's time of 19:58.3, the only time under 20 minutes on the 6K course, won the race and led five Tigers in the top 25 overall as Princeton easily defeated second-place Villanova to win the Mid-Atlantic regional meet at Lehigh University.
As the top two teams in the meet, Princeton and Villanova qualify automatically as teams for the NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Championship, which takes place Mon., Nov. 21, at Indiana State University. Princeton finished with 64 points, while second-place Villanova had 98.
Ferrell's 19:58.3 outdistanced American's Keira Carlstrom by nearly six seconds and Marina Muncan of Villanova by nearly 15 seconds. She was joined in the race's top 10 by Catha Mullen, who finished ninth overall in 20:52.1.
Also scoring for Princeton were freshman Jolee van Leuven, who finished 13th in 21:04.9, senior Suzanne Andrews, who was 22nd in 21:23.2, and junior Mia Swenson, just a second behind Andrews in 23rd place.
The Tigers finished in third place in the "White" race at the Pre-Nationals meet in October, held on the same course as the national championship meet next Monday. Ferrell was third individually in that race.
