PHILADELPHIA - Princeton's soon-to-be past and its present combined to do its part to make sure the Tiger women's soccer team has at least one more game this season. Other league results, however, did not go Princeton's way on Saturday, leaving the team's NCAA Tournament fate up to an at-large bid Monday.
After a Penn goal six minutes into the game, Princeton senior Romy Trigg-Smith scored in the first half and fellow Class of 2006 member Emily Behncke and freshman Aarti Jain chipped in goals in the second frame on the way to a 3-2 win in the regular season finale at Penn on Saturday evening.
With the win, Princeton finishes the regular season at 8-6-2 overall and 5-2-0 in the Ivy League. Yale topped Brown later in the day, 3-0, to win the league title and clinch an NCAA berth by one standings point, 16-15, over the Tigers. Princeton now waits for the decision of the NCAA committee, to be announced Monday.
On a corner kick, Trigg-Smith scored her second goal of the season in the 30th minute to tie the game and create a deadlock that continued through the halftime break. Behncke added her 14th goal of the season, the second-most ever scored in a year by a Tiger player, in the 62nd minute off an assist from sophomore Ashley Beyers to put Princeton ahead 3-2. Behncke is second only to Esmeralda Negron, a 2005 graduate, who scored 20 goals on the way to the NCAA College Cup semifinals last year. What turned out to be the game-winning goal came off the foot of Aarti Jain with 18 minutes left in the contest with an assist to sophomore Diana Matheson. Penn halved the Princeton lead two minutes later, but the Tigers prevented any further scoring in the last 16 minutes to preserve the 3-2 win.
The two teams tied in shots, 10-10, while Princeton senior keeper Emily Vogelzang made five saves and counterpart Jessica Keeley made four.
The NCAA Tournament selection announcement will be made on Monday on ESPNEWS between 5 and 5:30 p.m.
