PRINCETON, N.J. - Senior Heather Jackson and junior Kim Pearce scored goals in a five-minute stretch of the third period to give the Princeton women's hockey team a 2-1 lead, but Wayne State's Sam Poyton scored at 12:12 in a 2-2 deadlock between the teams at Baker Rink on Saturday afternoon. The tie ran Princeton's unbeaten streak to six games as Princeton is now off for the holidays until Jan. 2.
After a scoreless first period, Wayne State jumped to a 1-0 lead with its first of two power-play goals at 10:53. The goal came from Lindsay DiPietro who scored on the rebound of a shot from the point taken by Poyton. Tina Vanderhoeven also assisted on the goal.
That goal remained the only one scored through two periods of play. After taking just 14 shots through two periods, the Tigers played a strong third period, pointing 18 shots at the Wayne State net.
Princeton knotted the game at 1-1 at the 4:01 mark when Jackson converted on the power play for her second goal of the season. She took a pass from freshman Katherine Dineen in the circle and took a slapshot that beat Warrior goaltender Tiffany Thompson. Sophomore Marykate Oakley also assisted on the goal. Princeton made the lead 2-1 4:50 later when junior Kim Pearce scored while skating four aside. Junior Dina McCumber assisted on Pearce's sixth score of the year. The Tigers led for the first time, but the lead lasted less than four minutes, as Wayne State converted on the power play at 12:12 to knot the score at 2-2. Poyton received a pass from Melissa Boal behind the net and one-timed it for the goal. Danielle Wilson also assisted on the goal.
The score remained tied through regulation and into overtime. Each team had three shots in overtime but neither goaltender cracked and the game ended in a stalemate.
Senior Roxanne Gaudiel made 26 saves while Thompson stopped 33 shots.
Princeton is back in action on Monday, Jan. 2 when Providence visits Baker Rink at 7 p.m.
