Box Score
PRINCETON - Providence's Sonny Watrous scored midway through the third period to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Friars to a 2-1 win against the seventh-ranked Princeton women's hockey team. Princeton sophomore Brittany Salmon scored early in the second period to give the Tigers the lead, but Providence answered back and took the win.
After an even first period, Princeton went ahead 1-0 when Salmon capped an end-to-end play with her sixth goal of the season. The power-play goal began in the Tiger zone on the stick of junior Kim Pearce. She fed the puck up ice to senior Sarah Butsch to spring Butsch and Salmon on a two-on-one. Butsch brought the puck in close on PC netminder Jana Bugden before feeding Salmon, who slid it through her for the goal.
A little more than 12 minutes later, the Friars added a goal of their own on the power play to know the score at 1-1. Watrous worked the puck to Kathleen Smith on the point. Smith took a shot that was saved by Princeton senior goaltender Roxanne Gaudiel, but she couldn't hold onto the puck and Karen Thatcher scored on the rebound. The period ended tied at 1-1.
Princeton controlled the third period territorially and outshot Providence 10-3 in the period and 31-19 for the game. Despite the shot advantage, it was PC that was able to make the most of it chances as Watrous scored at the 9:23 mark to lift Providence to the win. Thatcher made the play as she carried the puck along the boards in the Princeton zone. She fed the puck through the crease where Watrous redirected it into the Tiger net. Kristen Gigliotti also assisted on the goal. Gaudiel made 17 saves in the game for the Tigers while Bugden made 30 for Providence. Princeton fell to 9-4-3 with the loss while Providence improved to 10-6-2.
Princeton returns to action on Friday night at Yale.
