Matheson, Behncke Add Soccer Buzz Honors To Impressive Postseason Credentials
December 21, 2005 | Women's Soccer
Two weeks after Princeton women's soccer standouts Diana Matheson and Emily Behncke earned NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Region honors, the two Tigers picked up another regional honor. Both were named to the 2005 Soccer Buzz Mid-Atlantic Region, including a first-team nod for Matheson.
Regional honors for the 2005 women's college soccer season were announced by Soccer Buzz on December 20, marking the tenth year of Soccer Buzz postseason accolades. Forty-six schools comprising the Mid-Atlantic Region were eligible. Buzz Awards, presented since 1996, were decided by a vote open to all Division 1 Head Coaches and Soccer Buzz staff.
Matheson was the team's second-leading scorer this season with five goals including three game-winners and seven assists. Both Matheson and Behncke were also unanimous first-team all-league selections, the only two unanimous choices in the conference. It is the second NSCAA all-region award for Matheson, who was on the first team last season.
Behncke finishes her career as the third-leading goal scorer (39) and point scorer (90) in Princeton history. This season, she had 14 goals, five more than anyone else in the Ivy League and second-most all-time in Princeton history. Her 0.88 goals per game average ranked 14th in the nation.
The Tigers finished 8-6-2 overall and 5-2-0 in the Ivy League in 2005, winning seven of their last nine games and taking the Ivy League race to the last day of the season after starting the year 1-4-2. Princeton finished second in the league standings with 15 points, just one point behind Yale.
