Clayton Barlow-Wilcox scored a game-high 15 points and Geoff Kozak hit a runner in the lane with 14 seconds left to put the game away as Division III Carnegie Mellon defeated Princeton, 51-46, in a men's basketball game played before 2,621 at Jadwin Gym Wednesday night.
Trailing 48-46 late, the Tigers (2-8) had two attempts to tie the game with under a minute left but came up empty both times. Patrick Ekeruo missed two free throws with 46 seconds remaining and Alex Okafor then missed two free throws after being fouled on a putback attempt of Ekeruo's second foul shot.
Kozak then drove the lane near the end of the shot clock for Carnegie Mellon (10-0) and banked a short jumper with 14 seconds left to make it 50-46.
Princeton trailed 46-40 with under six minutes left but rallied to the game at 46 on an Okafor putback with 2:57 left. But the Tigers had turnovers on their next two possessions with the score still tied, and CMU's Nate Maurer put his team ahead for good with a layup with 1:22 left.
In becoming the first Division III team to defeat Princeton in 28 all-time attempts, the undefeated Tartans, ranked No. 22 nationally in Division III, held the Tigers to just 28% shooting for the game and 17% shooting in the second half. Princeton led 32-29 at halftime but had just one basket, a Noah Savage three-pointer, in the first 11 minutes of the second half.
Carnegie Mellon scored nine straight points early in the half to lead by as many as seven, 42-35, after a Brad Matta three-pointer with 12:22 left. Princeton, which was led by a career-high 11 points from Edwin Buffmire, making his first career start, shot just 5 for 12 from the foul line in the second half after making all 12 of its free-throw attempts in the first half. The Tigers shot just 1 for 9 from three-point range in the second half.
The Tigers trailed by as many as five points in the first half before rallying late to take the three-point halftime lead. Princeton scored eight straight points late in the half in a two-minute span.
Barlow-Wilcox also had a game-high nine rebounds for the Tartans, who outrebounded Princeton 33-27. Maurer, CMU's leading scorer, came off the bench to score 13 points and grab eight rebounds in 29 minutes.
Savage had 10 points and nine rebounds for Princeton, which lost its fourth straight game. The Tigers connected on just 12 of 43 field-goal attempts for the game.
