PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton's Emily Behncke and Diana Matheson were named second-team All-Mid-Atlantic by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America on Tuesday after being named to the All-Ivy first team last month. Behncke was also Princeton's fourth Ivy League Player of the Year in five years this season.
Thirty-three student-athletes were honored over the Mid-Atlantic region, which covers from Pennsylvania and New Jersey south to Virginia and West Virginia. Coaches in the region voted on the awards, and Behncke and Matheson were the only players between the region's two Ivy League schools and in the state of New Jersey as well to be honored.
It is the third straight NSCAA second-team honor for Behncke, who finishes her career as the third-leading goal scorer (39) and point scorer (90) in Princeton history. This season, Behncke had 14 goals, five more than anyone else in the Ivy League and second-most all-time in Princeton history. Her 0.88 goals per game average ranked 14th in the nation.
Matheson was the team's second-leading scorer this season with five goals including three game-winners and seven assists. Both Matheson and Behncke were also unanimous first-team all-league selections, the only two unanimous choices in the conference. It is the second NSCAA all-region award for Matheson, who was on the first team last season.
The Tigers finished 8-6-2 overall and 5-2-0 in the Ivy League in 2005, winning seven of their last nine games and taking the Ivy League race to the last day of the season after starting the year 1-4-2. Princeton finished second in the league standings with 15 points, just one point behind Yale.
