PRINCETON, N.J. - Four Tigers recorded a goal and an assist at the sixth-ranked Princeton women's hockey team defeated Wayne State 5-2 on Friday afternoon at Baker Rink and extended its winning streak to five games. Junior Sarah Butsch scored Princeton's game-winner on a blast from the top of the circle at 14:18 of the first period.
The Tigers controlled play from the onset and got on the scoreboard at the 2:23 mark when freshman Annie Greenwood scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season. Junior Kim Pearce got Greenwood the puck behind the goal line and she came out in front and shoved the puck by Wayne State goaltender Valery Turcotte to give Princeton a 1-0 lead.
Wayne State answered the goal with its first of two power-play goals at 8:48 of the first period. Jessica Snelgrove followed up on her own rebound, picking it up and circling to the face-off dot before releasing the shot.
Princeton went ahead for good with two goals late in the period. First Pearce followed up on her own rebound to make the score 2-1 and then Butsch made the score 301 with her shot. Pearce got the puck low and drive to the net for her fifth goal of the season, then Butsch scored off the rush for the 3-1 lead.
Princeton extended the lead with two goals in the second period. First at 4:05 senior Tarah Clark hammered home a loose puck and then sophomore Marykate Oakley scored from the top of the slot. The same line produced the two goals as Clark's was assist by sophomore Sonja Novak and Oakley, and Oakley's was set up by Novak and Clark. Wayne State added the final goal in the third period on the power play and it was scored by Tina Vanderhoeven.
