Tigers Dominate in New Haven, Win H-Y-P Meet

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Princeton men's track team won nine of 17 events to easily defeat host Yale and Harvard in the annual H-Y-P indoor track meet held this year at the newly-dedicated Frank Shorter Track Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers had dominant performances in the sprints, middle-distance races, the relay events and in field-event competition. Princeton finished the meet with 80 points, while Yale was second with 55 and Harvard trailed with 35 points.
Princeton got off to a strong start to the meet, getting a win from Richard Stewart in the 400 meters (48.30) and from Mike Kopp in the 500-meter dash (1:03.90). Alexis Tingan then won the 800 in a time of 1:52.47. Ray Lenihan continued his strong season in the 60-meter hurdles, winning that race in a time of 8.12 seconds.
Tiger teams won both the 4x400 and 4X800 relay events and established themselves as Heps favorites in those events.
Princeton won three field events on Saturday afternoon. Andrew Park took the pole vault competition, leaping 16 feet, 9 1/4 inches, while Dwaine Banton won the long jump with a strong leap of 24 feet, 2 1/4 inches. Matt McNamara was the winner in the 35-lb. weight throw with a toss of 50 feet, 10 1/4 inches.
The Tigers host the Princeton Invitational next weekend before heading to Indoor Heps at Harvard in two weeks.
