PRINCETON, N.J. - Freshman Ariel Rogers recorded an new career-high with 14 points after receiving the starting nod and led Princeton to a 53-50 win over Brown, Friday night in Jadwin Gym. The Tigers improve to 12-10 on the season and 4-5 in the Ivy League, while Brown falls to 7-3 in the League and 15-8 overall.
Rogers 14 points in the game was one better than her 13-point effort from last night against Yale. Junior Katy O'Brien had a team-high 16 points, including four three-pointers.
Holly Robertson scored 24 points and grabbed eight boards for Brown, while Sarah Hayes chipped in 10.
Hayes stole the ball on an entry pass and was sent to the charity stripe, where she connected on both attempts and gave Brown a one-point lead, 50-49 at the 1:36 mark. Sophomore Katy Digovich grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed shot from sophomore Casey Lockwood and scored the layup to regain a one-point advantage with 17 seconds of action left. With eight second remaining Anne O'Neal had a chance to score from Brown, but O'Brien blocked her shot and retained the ball for Princeton. Digovich was fouled with five seconds left to play and confidently made both free throws to seal the win. The opening 12 minutes of the second half included six ties and two lead changes. Princeton won the out-right lead, 41-39 at the 7:39 mark with a lay-up from Digovich, after a three-minute scoring drought by both teams.
Rogers handed the ball off to O'Brien at the top of the key and made it a five-point game, 44-41 with 6:56 to play. Robertson scored a basket under the rim to close the gap to three points.
O'Brien made her fourth shot from outside the arc with 4:09 on the game clock and increased the Tigers lead to six, 47-41. Following a missed three-point attempt by O'Neal, Digovich scored off an offensive rebound on the Tiger's possession. Digovich had a team-leading eight rebounds in the game.
The Bears chipped away at the score with two free throws from Andrea Conrad and a three-pointer from Kelly Colleen. With 3:20 remaining Princeton led 49-46. Robertson made two free throws after a home-team turnover and cut the lead to one, 49-48.
Princeton held a 12-11 lead following two made free throws from Brown's Robertson. The Tigers then went on a 10-2 run over the next six minutes and held a 22-13 advantage at 14 minutes into the opening period. O'Brien tallied five points in the run with a three-ball and two trips to the foul line.
At the 4:05 mark the Bears began to cut away at the Tigers lead with a turn-a-round jumper from Robertson. Brown trailed 25-20. Rogers added two free throws for the Tigers on the next play to lead by seven. Brown rallied a 5-0 spurt to end the half and trailed 27-25 into the locker room.
The Tigers continue action in Jadwin Gym as they host Columbia on Friday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.
