PRINCETON, N.J. - The women's basketball team dropped its final home game of the season to Cornell, 76-61 Saturday in Jadwin Gym. Princeton slips to 5-7 in the Ivy league and 13-12 overall, while Cornell gets its first win in the conference (1-11) and sits at 3-22 on the season.
Prior to the game's tip-off, senior Kristin Lynch was honored as the lone senior on the Princeton squad. Lynch was the first to work four years with head coach Richard Barron.
Cornell jumped out on Princeton quickly and built a 25-9 lead off a three-pointer by Gretchen Gregg halfway through the first period. Freshman Ali Prichard entered the game and cut the lead by three with an old-fashion three-point play on the next drive. Princeton trailed by 12 at the 6:46 mark following junior Katy O'Brien's made basket from behind the arc, 29-17. Gregg countered with a three of her own and pushed Cornell back up 15 with 4:25 left in the first half.
The Tigers surged an 11-2 run to end the half at 36-30 in favor of the Big Red. Freshman Ariel Rogers scored four points in the run.
Sophomore Casey Lockwood scored off a layup to open the second period. Rogers jumper at the 18:35 mark made it a two-point game, 36-34 Cornell. The Tigers then went dry for three minutes and the Big Red jumped up five 41-36 six minutes into the second stanza.
Cornell increased its lead with six good trips to the foul line making it 49-39 with just over 10 minutes to play. Lockwood converted on two layups and Prichard nailed a three-pointer to give Princeton momentum with just under five minutes remaining on the game clock. The Big Red held a 60-49 lead after Prichard's basket.
Two minutes later O'Brien found Prichard off a screen and chipped another three points off the Cornell lead, 63-54, with 3:52 to play. However, a 9-2 run highlighted by Cornell's Lindsay Krasna, who scored four points, pulled the game out of reach in the final minute.
O'Brien, Prichard, Rogers and freshman Meagan Cowher all scored nine points in the contest.
Princeton travels to Cambridge, Mass. for a 6 p.m. contest against Harvard on Friday, March 4.
