SAN JOSE, Calif. - Early runs in the first inning paced the Tigers to a 8-1 victory over Rhode Island on Sunday in the final round-robin game of the National Invitational Softball Tournament. Princeton improves to 7-3 overall and finished 3-2 on the weekend. The Tigers scored five run in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Senior Melissa Finley's homerun over the center field fence tallied the first two runs for Princeton as she and sophomore Tiffany Andras scored. A wild pitch from Katie Halcomb of the Rams gave junior Erin Snyder the green light to score, while an error by Halcomb on the same play also brought in junior Amanda Erickson.
Junior Cristina Cobb-Adams garnered an RBI as she hit the ball right down the middle and advanced Allaway for the score late in the third. Erickson recorded her second homerun of the season on the first pitch of the seventh inning and Cobb's second RBI came as freshman Beth Dalmut, who reached base on a fielder's choice, scored on a single to center field. For Rhode Island, Courtney Wall homered in the first inning for the lone Ram score. Varner (1-0) picked up the win for the Tigers, while Halcomb takes the loss for Rhode Island. Princeton faces St. Mary's at 1 p.m. in Moraga, Calif. on Monday, March 14.
