Women's Hockey Falls in Overtime to Yale in Game 1 of ECACHL Quarterfinals

New Haven, Conn. - Deena Caplette scored at 15:22 of overtime to lift Yale past the Princeton women's hockey team 4-3 Friday night in the first game of the ECAC Hockey League quarterfinals at Yale's Ingalls Rink. Princeton will look to even up the series tomorrow afternoon when the teams meet for Game 2.
Yale opened the scoreing on Helon Resor's unassisted goal at 3:31 of the first period, but power-play goals from sophomores Liz Keady at 4:52 and Kim Pearce at 11:20 gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead at the end of a period. Pearce assisted on Watt's goal, while sophomore Laura Watt had an assist on Pearce's tally. The goals were the 15th for each player. Yale evened the score in the second on Natalie Babony's goal at 3:38, but the Tigers scored to take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission on senior Katharine Maglione's tally at 17:47. Pearce and junior Sarah Butsch assisted on the goal.
The scored remained in Princeton's favor until Maglione's delay of game penalty at 14:26 of the third resulted in a penalty shot for Resor. She scored on the penalty shot to even things up and send the game to overtime.
In overtime, shots were even, but it was Yale's sixth shot that found the back of the net. Caplette scored the goal with assists from Erin Duggan and Kristin Savard.
Shots in the game were even at 36 apiece. Junior Roxanne Gaudiel made 32 saves in the loss, while Sarah Love made 33 stops.
Princeton is now 16-9-5 on the season. The series will resume tomorrow as the Tigers look to even the series and force a third game on Sunday afternoon.
