Greensville, N.C. - Senior Ty Ries records her first homerun of the season, as the Princeton softball team wins both games on the opening day of the East Carolina Pirate Clash on Friday. The Tigers earned a 1-0 win over N.C. State in the first game of the day, while rallying a 3-0 victory against James Madison in the second game.
Ries ended what looked to be a no-hitter for N.C. State pitcher Abbie Sims. With two outs in the fifth inning, Ries dinged a homer to the right centerfield and scored the lone run for the Tigers.
Junior Erin Snyder (1-0) was the winning pitcher. Snyder had 11 strikeouts and four hits in seven innings. In the second game, sophomore Calli Varner (1-0) pitched the first five innings of the JMU game and secured her first win of the season after she tallied eight strikeouts.
Sophomore Betsy Allaway singled to left center in the second inning and drove in freshman Beth Dalmut, who was walked earlier. Dalmut recorded Princeton's first score of the game and her first-career run.
In the fifth inning, junior Cristina Cobb-Adams, who singled to left field, scored after classmate Amanda Erickson hit a single. Cobb-Adams then scored again in the seventh inning after she hit a double to center field and then advanced to third off a wild pitch. Erickson's second single to left field tallied the score at 3-0.
Tournament action continues tomorrow as the Tigers face Elon at 9 a.m. and conclude with an afternoon game against host East Carolina at 1 p.m.
