EAST ORANGE, N.J. -- Five runs in the fifth inning of game two proved to be enough, as the Princeton softball team split a doubleheader against Seton Hall, today, at Ivy Hill Park. In the first game the Tigers fell 2-0 in nine innings, before coming from behind and taking game two, 5-3. Princeton improved to 29-14 on the season, while the Pirates slip to 25-12 overall.
The Tigers rattled off five runs in the fifth inning to take the lead and secure the victory. Senior Melissa Finley stepped to the plate with bases loaded after sophomore Tiffany Andras singled to left field and both juniors Cristina Cobb-Adams and Lindsay Motal were walked by Seton Hall`s Maura Lund. After patiently taking three balls from the Pirates' relief pitcher Jessica Jones, Finley sent a single over the short stop's head to score Andras and tie the game at one. Snyder followed with a single to center field that allowed both Cobb-Adams and Motal to cross home plate. Freshman Beth Dalmut, then, sailed a double off the left field gate with two outs to score Finley and Snyder.
A wild pitch from sophomore Calli Jo Varner scored the third run for Seton Hall in the bottom of the fifth. As the Pirates threatened to add more points to the board with runners on second and third base and two outs, Varner earned the third out with a strikeout. Seton Hall scored its first run, as Katie Pierce stole second and was overthrown, twice in the second inning. Caitlin White, then, scored off a single in the third.
Both Dalmut and Snyder were two-for-four at bat and earned two RBI.
Varner (5-1) earned the win for Princeton and allowed five hits and three runs in seven innings, while Lund (4-4) took the loss for the Pirates from the mound.
In the first game of the day freshman Kristen Schaus posted a no-hitter into the sixth inning, where Kate DePaul hit a lead off single to left field. Princeton's defense kept her on first base by sending the next three batters back to the dugout with an out.
The Tigers had a great opportunity to take a one-run lead in the eighth inning after Motal received a lead off walk from the Pirates' Megan Meyer. After Seton Hall's defense tallied two outs, Snyder stepped to the plate and hit a sharp shot that dropped in front of the right fielder and took a hard bounce to the right. Motal quickly rounded the bases but was caught at home, as the right fielder threw the ball to the catcher. On defense, three pop outs ended the eighth.
Laura Taylor of Seton Hall ended the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run to left field and a runner on base.
Princeton had a chance to end the game in seven innings with runners in scoring positions in both the third and sixth innings. In the third, Andras hit a double to right-center field and Cobb-Adams singled past a stretching second baseman to advance Andras to third base. However, the Tigers were unable to drive them in. Later in the sixth, Snyder sat on third base after being walked and freshman Beth Dalmut hit a double to center field. Down two outs, sophomore Stephanie Steel hit a line drive at Seton Hall's pitcher, Jones, who placed her glove in the right place to make the catch.
Schaus (11-7) took the loss for Princeton, allowing just two hits in 8.2 innings and collected 10 strikeouts. Meyer (18-4) earned the win for Seton Hall, also allowing two hits but in 4.0 innings.
Princeton travels to New Haven, Conn. on Saturday, April 23 for a doubleheader against Yale slated for 1 p.m.
