PRINCETON, N.J.- Senior Melissa Finley recorded four RBIs and tallied a home run to lead Princeton to a sweep in the Ivy League opener, as the Tigers blanked Penn, 4-0 and 3-0, at 1895 Field on Tuesday. Princeton improves to 19-7 on the season and 2-0 in the conference, while Penn dropped to 9-13 overall and 0-2 in the league.
In the first game junior Erin Snyder (10-2) tallied 11 strikeouts from the mound and allowed two hits in her fifth shutout of the season. Snyder has a .79 era and has tallied 117 strikeouts in 80 innings pitched.
Leading off for the Tigers in the bottom of the fourth inning, Snyder hit her third home run of the season and gave Princeton a 1-0 lead.
Later, in the fifth inning, junior Lindsay Motal's deep shot to centerfield scored junior Cristina Cobb-Adams, who advanced to base on a single to left field. An error by Penn's third baseman, trying to make a play on Finley's hit, allowed Motal to score the third run for Princeton.
Sophomore Calli Jo Varner notched the final run of the game with a home run over the left-centerfield wall in the sixth inning. Varner has hit two home runs in the last four contests.
Lindsey Permar (2-5) took the loss for the Quakers, allowing four runs off seven hits.
Game two of the doubleheader remained scoreless until the sixth inning due to strong defensive efforts by both teams. Kristen Schaus (7-4) posted her third shutout of the season and allowed only four hits in the contest. Schaus recorded 11 strikeouts in the game, while Ann Ferracane allowed three runs off five hits for Penn.
The Tigers' late rally in the sixth inning was surged by Finley's fifth homer of the season. Finley held a 3-2 count with Andras on third and Motal on first base, as she sent Ann Ferracane's eighth pitch over the centerfield fence adding three more RBIs to her team-leading 18.
The Quakers best opportunity to score was in the top of the sixth inning with runners on both third and second base with only one out. However, defense by Cobb-Adams, who grounded out Penn's Christina Krosravi and Amanda Erickson, who caught a pop up by Jen Nichols held the Quakers scoreless.
Princeton travels to Philadelphia, Pa. to face Temple at 4 p.m., tomorrow.
