COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's Brooke Richards rolled from behind the net and scored past Princeton goalie Sarah Kolodner 47 seconds into the second sudden-victory overtime period, giving the No. 8 Terrapins a 13-12 victory over the No. 4 Tigers in a women's lacrosse thriller played at Ludwig Field Wednesday night.
Maryland (11-6), which defeated the Tigers (12-4) for the first time since 2001, trailed 11-10 after Princeton's Katie Lewis-Lamonica scored her fifth goal 1:21 into the first overtime and trailed 12-11 when Princeton's Kathleen Miller scored on a free-position shot in the final seconds of that period. But the Terps tied the game just 23 seconds into the second overtime period on a Casey Magor goal, then won it on Richards' goal after neither team scored in the first sudden-death OT.
Princeton could have lost both at the end of regulation and at the end of the first sudden-death overtime, but Kolodner made saves on Katie Doolittle and Delia Cox respectively at those times to extend the game. The Princeton goalie has 12 saves in the game, including eight in the second half and overtime periods.
"It was definitely a postseason atmosphere for a game," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer, whose team will find out its NCAA tournament fate Sunday night when selections for the 2005 championship are announced. "These are the kinds of games and the kinds of teams we'll have to beat to advance in the tournament."
The game was one that was defined by runs and one that saw five ties before Richards won it for Maryland in the 69th minute. Maryland scored twice early to take a 2-0 lead, but Lewis-Lamonica then had two goals in a two-minute span to tie it midway through the half. Maryland would go back ahead 4-2 with 10 minutes left in the half, but the Tigers tied it five minutes later on a Lindsey Biles goal and took a 6-4 lead into halftime when Miller scored on a free-position shot late. The Terps would then dominate the early part of the second half, tying the game at 7-7 with 24 minutes left on a Kelly Kasper goal and then scoring three more times, the final one coming from Cox, to take a 10-7 lead midway through the half. But Lewis-Lamonica would lead the Tigers back, scoring twice in less than a minute to make it 10-9, and Christine Dobrosky's free-position goal with 6:14 left tied it for the fourth time, at 10.
"I got the first couple goals and I felt like I could take the ball to the net," said Lewis-Lamonica, who now has 26 goals her freshman season. "Things worked out for me tonight."
Maryland won all seven draw controls in overtime and outshot the Tigers 25-10 in the final 40 minutes of the game. Richards had three goals and an assist, while Cox, Krista Pellizzi, Doolittle and Magor each scored twice.
Miller had two goals for Princeton, while Dobrosky had a goal and two assists. The Tigers played their third straight game without senior captain Elizabeth Pillion, who has a hamstring injury.
Princeton fell to 2-2 in overtime this season. The Tigers were playing their 13th game out of 16 regular-season games against a ranked opponent.
