Final Stats
The Loyola Marymount women's soccer team has played more than 100 minutes of overtime already this young season. Thanks to Diana Matheson, Princeton has barely played two.
Matheson drilled a pass from Emily Behncke into the top left corner of the net 2:20 into overtime to give Princeton a 2-1 win over Loyola Marymount on the second day of the Princeton Women's Soccer Invitational. Arizona then defeated Penn 4-0 in the final game of the event.
The win improved Princeton to 1-3 on the season, while LMU fell to 0-3-3. Amazingly, all six of Loyola Marymount's games have gone to overtime, and the loss to Princeton marked the first of the six that did not reach double overtime.
"It was good to get a win," said Matheson, a sophomore who was a first-team All-America a year ago as Princeton reached the NCAA Final Four. "It feels very good. It's a very young team, a lot of freshmen and sophomores, and we're still feeling our way."
The game-winner came after Behncke slid the ball through the box to Matheson, a member of the Canadian national team. Matheson then turned and ripped the ball in the goal to end it.
Behncke's assist came after she had scored Princeton's first goal of the game 11 minutes into the second half. Lisa Chinn started the play with a long run into the box from the left side, and Behncke was able to finish after Chinn's feed into the middle.
For Chinn, it was her first career point. For Behncke, it was the 27th goal of her career, moving her into third place all-time at Princeton. She also has two goals and an assist this season, giving her 65 career points, also third-best all-time at Princeton. LMU was able to tie the score 12 minutes after Behncke's goal when Michelle Kanama scored in the 69th minute. Neither team had any great scoring chances until Matheson's game-winner.
Princeton outshot LUM 15-8. Joslyn Slovek made eight saves for LMU, while Madeleine Jackson made three for Princeton, who is at UConn Friday night.
