Southern Pines, N.C. - The Princeton men's golf team teed off for the first time in the 2005-06 season on Monday at the Mid Pines Intercollegiate, hosted by UNC Greensboro at the Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C. The Tigers sit tied for 10th in the team standings after two rounds of play, with Jason Gerken leading all Princeton competitors tied for 16th.
Princeton shot rounds of 288 and 295 for a total of 583 on the first day of competition. The 288 was even and had the Tigers tied for seventh after the first round, but the second-round 295 bumped the Tigers back to 10th, where they are tied with Virginia Commonwealth and Wichita State. Lamar leads the tournament with a two-round 560. Charlotte, St. Mary's, Maryland and UNC Greensboro complete the top five.
Gerken (71-72-143) is tied with seven others at 16th at one under par. That puts him seven strokes behind the leader, Jonathan Hodge of Chattanooga. Jesse Dixon comes next for the Tigers in a tie for 43rd after two rounds at one over par (73-73-146). John Sawin is two strokes behind him in a tie for 56th after rounds of 72 and 76. John Locke is tied for 87th (72-83-155). Brent Herlihy (82-74-156) rounds out the Princeton fivesome in a tie for 89th.
The tournament concludes tomorrow.
