Miami, Fla. - Mary Cestelanelli's goal came early in the second half. Or late in the second half, depending how you look at it.
Castelanelli tucked a 25-yard shot just inside the far post 15 minutes after intermission to give third-ranked UCLA a 1-0 win over No. 21 Princeton in women's soccer game Friday night at the University of Miami.
The game was halted and called official 10 minutes later with 18 minutes still on the clock when a second lightning storm came along. The game had been delayed for one hour during halftime by a first lightning storm.
"It was a good first game for us," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford, the 2004 NSCAA Division I Coach of the Year. "We played well. We competed well. This will give us something to build on."
The game was a rematch of last year's NCAA semfinals, won by UCLA 2-0. The Bruins, coached by Shackford's best friend Jill Ellis, improved to 3-0 on the year, while the Tigers were playing their first game after a week of preseason.
Princeton will face Miami Sunday (2:30).
Princeton, who graduated 10 seniors from its 19-3 season, was without first-team All-America Diana Matheson, the sophomore who is playing this weekend with the Canadian national team. The Tigers started freshmen Taylor Numann and Aarti Jain, as well as sophomores Meredith Wall and Melissa Whitley, who made their first career starts, and sophomore Lisa Chinn, who made her second.
The game was scoreless at intermission. Princeton's best two scoring chances came from Maura Gallagher and Ashley Beyers.
Castelellani's shot, on an assist from Iris Mora, snuck past senior goalkeeper Madeleine Jackson, who otherwise had a nine-save night for the Tigers. The goal came at the 61:30 mark, and 10 minutes later, the lightning returned.
