MINNEAPOLIS - Princeton head coach Peter Farrell has taken his women's cross country team to Minnesota's strong Griak Invitational the last couple of years partially as a gift to All-America and now-senior Cack Ferrell. On Saturday, Ferrell returned the favor in a big way.
The senior and Minneapolis native finished in third place overall, just six seconds behind race winner Amy Hastings of Arizona State, to lead the Tigers to a fifth-place finish in the annual race held at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course.
Ferrell ran the six-kilometer course in 21:04, trailing just Hastings and Wichita State's Desiraye Osburn.
Princeton's fifth-place finish also came as the result of a few more strong performances, particularly one by junior Catha Mullen. Mullen fashioned a top 20 finish for the Tigers, placing 18th, in a time of 21:38.
The Tigers joined race winner Arizona State (88), host Minnesota (156) and third-place Baylor (177) as the only teams to have two or more runners finish in the top 20 in the event. The Tigers finished the race in fifth with 192 points.
Princeton's other scorers were senior Meredith Lambert, who was 54th in 22:20, junior Mia Swenson, who finished 59th in 22:23, and freshman Jolee van Leuven, who placed 66th in 22:32. Sophomore Caitlin McTague ran the same time as van Leuven, while Suzanne Andrews finished in 23:08. Princeton, ranked 14th nationally, returns to action in two weeks at the Pre-National Invitational at Indiana State.
