Women's Volleyball Tops Ivy Defending-Champ Cornell 3-1
October 13, 2006 | Women's Volleyball
PRINCETON, N.J. -- In another highlight of what is becoming a tremendous season for the Princeton women's volleyball team, the Tigers topped defending Ivy League champion Cornell, 3-1, Friday night at Dillon Gymnasium.
Four Princeton hitters had double-figure kills, led by Parker Henritze's 21, Lindsey Ensign's 17, Sheena Donohue's 13 and Jessica Hoffman's 10. Bailey Robinson provided 55 assists in the win and Hoffmann's .533 attack percentage was a match high.
In game one, Princeton fell behind by as many as three points at 12-9 before winning three straight points to tie the game. The Tigers were never ahead by more than three from that point in the stanza, but it was enough to hold off the Big Red and win the opener, 31-29. Kills by Ensign and Donohue broke a 29-29 tie to secure the opening frame as Princeton outshot Cornell .237-.222.
The momentum remained in game two as the Tigers jumped out to a 5-1 lead before the Big Red caught Princeton at 8-8 and again at 10-10. But from that point, Princeton outscored Cornell 20-13 in what was the weakest offensive game for both squads, as the Orange and Black held Cornell to a .167 attack percentage but hit only .209 themselves to win the stanza 30-23.
The Tigers let a late lead slip in the third game, and momentum seemed to turn. Inching a narrow lead over the Big Red as late as 26-24, Cornell scored six of the last seven points to halve Princeton's lead in games, 2-1. The Big Red hit a solid .385 in the match and held Princeton to a .222 attack clip while winning, 30-27.
But Princeton's bid to make a statement against the reigning Ivy titlists wouldn't be denied. Again jumping out to leads of 5-1 and 7-3, Princeton held off the Big Red for most of the game before falling behind 22-18. A kill by Henritze and a pair of attack errors helped the Tigers to a 23-21 lead that Princeton never lost, winning the game 30-25.
Cornell's Elizabeth Bishop had a game-high 25 kills and .393 attack percentage as the Big Red outhit Princeton .270-.248 in the losing effort. Eight service errors to three for the Tigers also hurt Cornell in the loss as the Princeton back line outdug the Big Red 62-45 with Henritze posting a match-high 20 digs.
Princeton will look to move to 4-1 in Ivy play Saturday at Dillon Gym against Columbia at 4 p.m.
