Maag, Nightingale Lead Tigers to 13th Place Finish in Pre-Nationals "White" Race
October 13, 2006 | Men's Cross Country
Led by sophomore Michael Maag and junior David Nightingale, the Princeton men's cross country team placed 13th out of 36 teams in the "White" race at the 2006 Pre-Nationals Invitational Saturday at Indiana State's Lavern Gibson Course.
In a terrific field featuring many of the top-ranked teams in the country, including two of the top five in Stanford and Iona, the Tigers finished ahead of two ranked teams in William & Mary and Arizona State. Princeton was just out of the top 30 in the national rankings prior to Saturday's race.
Maag finished 37th overall in a time of 24:15.1 over the 8,000 meters at the Lavern Gibson Course, site of next month's NCAA championship race. Nightingale was just a few seconds behind, in 43rd place, in 24:20.1
Two other Tiger scorers finished in the top 100. Frank Tinney and Paul Rosa ran together in 82nd and 83rd place in times of 24:45. The Tigers, who also got a 111th place finish from Tim O'Neill (24:56), finished with a team score of 351.
Iona won a close contest with Stanford for the team title in the race. The Gaels finished with a score of 100, just ahead of Stanford's 106. Florida, Notre Dame and Iowa rounded out the top five.
James O'Toole also ran Saturday for Princeton, finishing just behind O'Neill in a time of 24:57.2
Princeton runs at the Ivy League Heptagonals at New York's Van Cortlandt Park in two weeks.
