Women's Cross Country Finishes Ninth in Pre-Nationals Blue Race

In a 36-team field featuring many of the top-ranked teams in the country, including No. 1 Stanford, the No. 7-ranked Princeton women's cross country team placed ninth in the "Blue" Race at the 2006 Pre-Nationals Invitational at Indiana State's Lavern Gibson Course Saturday.
The Tigers, who finished with a team score of 336, were one of just six teams to place three runners in the top 50 in the race.
Mia Swenson was 40th overall in 20:58.9 over the 6,000-meter course, while Jolee VanLeuven was 47th in 21:04.2. Freshman Christy Johnson was just behind in 50th in 21:05.9.
Seven of the eight teams that finished ahead of the Tigers were also in the top 21 of the national rankings. No. 1 Stanford placed an impressive four runners in the top 10 to win the race convicingly with a score of 45, easily outdistancing second-place Minnesota, who finished with a score of 200.
Arizona State, BYU, Providence, Michigan State, Florida State, Florida, the Tigers and Iowa rounded out the top 10. Of those teams, only the Gators were not in the national top 30 poll this week.
Rounding out the Princeton scorers on Saturday were senior Catha Mullen, who finished in 72nd in 21:23.5, and junior Caitlin McTague, who was 127th in 21:52.1.
Freshmen Liz Costello (21:59.1) and Reilly Kiernan (22:08.9) also competed in the race for the Tigers.
Princeton runs at Ivy League Heptagonals at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City in two weeks.
