Princeton Downs Harvard; Claims Ivy Title
October 21, 2006 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- The Princeton field hockey team clinched its second straight Ivy League title and its 12th in 14 years with a 3-1 win over Harvard on Saturday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium. Sophomore Holly McGarvie's team-leading seventh goal of the season proved to be the game winner.
Harvard took the early lead in the game with a goal at 9:30 as Aline Brown collected the rebound of a blocked shot and scored on the short side to give the Crimson a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers responded 2:21 later to even the score when sophomore Leah Hoagland deflected a free hit into the Harvard goal for her third goal of the season. Junior Paige Schmidt played the ball in from the midfield and assisted on the goal.
The first half ended at 1-1 despite the Tigers holding a 10-7 edge in shots.
Princeton took the lead for good at 43:25 when McGarvie scored. Sophomore Kristin Schwab and Harvard goalkeeper Kelly Knoche raced to a loose ball at the top of the circle. Schwab got there first and took a shot that Knoche saved but the rebound bounced to McGarvie on the side who had a wide-open net.
Princeton added an insurance goal in a similar manner with 14 minutes remaining. With Harvard pressing, Princeton looked to counter as the ball was played up to sophomore Katie Kinzer in the Harvard zone. Kinzer carried the ball towards the cage and drew Knoche to her before feeding freshman Tina Bortz. Bortz staved off a defender and got a shot off that found the net just before Knoche was able to slide back into position.
Princeton controlled play the rest of the way, limiting the Harvard chances, and holding on for the 3-1 win. Senior goalkeeper Allison Nemeth made five saves while Knoche made eight. Princeton outshot the Crimson 18-12 and outcornered Harvard 18-12.
Princeton is now 8-6 for the season and a perfect 6-0 in the Ivy League. The Tigers clinched the outright Ivy League title with the win, coupled with Brown's loss at Cornell. Princeton is back in action tomorrow when it hosts No. 19 American at 2 p.m.
