Volleyball Holds Off Harvard Comeback, Wins 3-1
October 27, 2006 | Women's Volleyball
PRINCETON, N.J. -- In a short space of time, the night for the Princeton women's volleyball team went from looking like an easy one to a disappointing one at last to an excited, relieved one.
After taking the first two games against Harvard, the Tigers lost game three and fell behind in game four before coming back to win, 3-1. The win improves Princeton to 16-2 overall and 6-2 in the Ivy League, in the thick of a crowded race with Cornell and Yale.
The Tigers cruised to victory in games one and two by hitting .395 and .389, respectively, and winning those games 30-26 and 30-17. But after being tied at 5-5 in game three, Harvard scored the next seven points in the game and never surrendered the lead, taking the match to a fourth stanza with a 30-20 win.
It was in that fourth game that things went from bad to worse to great for Princeton. The Orange and Black fell behind as much as 10-4 and 14-8 before starting their run. From that point, Princeton scored 10 of the next 11 points, with four kills from Parker Henritze mixed in, to take an 18-15 lead.
Still, the Crimson weren't about to let go of their comeback. After working the game back to a tie as late as 21-21, Princeton scored the next six points, five of which came on Harvard attacking errors, to take a 27-21 lead. From there, Princeton simply kept pace and won the game, 30-26, taking the match.
Henritze (28 kills) and Lindsey Ensign (21) were the only hitters on either squad with 20 or more kills, and Bailey Robinson provided a match-high 62 assists. Emily Turner led all back-liners with 29 digs.
Coupled with Cornell's win over Yale Friday night in Ithaca, N.Y., Yale and Cornell co-lead the Ivy League at 7-2 with Princeton a half-match back at 6-2. Saturday, Princeton will host Dartmouth, the first team this season to hand the Orange and Black a loss, at 4 p.m. at Dillon Gym.
