Tigers Knock Off Previously Unbeaten St. Lawrence in Women's Hockey, 6-5
October 27, 2006 | Women's Ice Hockey
It seemed like the Princeton women's hockey team spent much of the final two periods against St. Lawrence Friday night at Baker Rink either on the penalty kill or in their own end. But a tremendous first period scoring outburst, and some terrific goaltending from Kristen Young, was enough for the Tigers to get a huge early-season win.
Marykate Oakley scored twice in a 2:04 span in the first period, when Brittany Salmon also had a shorthanded goal, and Young made 18 saves on 20 St. Lawrence shots in the final period as the No. 9 Tigers defeated the No. 3 Saints at Baker Rink, 6-5, to knock St. Lawrence from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Princeton (2-0-1, 2-0 ECACHL) ended a wild six-minute stretch in the first period with a 4-2 lead, then led 6-3 after Kim Pearce scored with just 46 seconds left in the second period. St. Lawrence (6-1-0, 2-1 ECACHL) then peppered the Princeton net in the third period, taking advantage of power plays to score twice in a five-minute span, but Young and the defense held on in the final four minutes.
Young, a sophomore and first-year starter, had 46 saves, including at least 13 in every period. She was tested by a St. Lawrence team that had 13 power-play attempts, scoring four of its five goals with the extra player.
The Tigers had two two-man advantages in the first period, and took advantage of one when Annie Greenwood gave her team a 1-0 lead 7:17 into the game. But that was just the beginning of a crazy stretch that left the previously undefeated Saints in a hole after one period.
Princeton would score again just 1:39 after Greenwood's goal, with Oakley scoring on a 4-on-4 situation. But St. Lawrence's Sabrina Harbec pulled her team back to within 2-1 just over a minute later.
Oakley would strike again for Princeton, however, scoring an unassisted goal after a St. Lawrence turnover, but the Saints were back within 3-2 just two minutes later when Kerri Wallace took advantage of another power-play opportunity.
Princeton's final goal of the period came on a another power-play opportunity for St. Lawrence. Brittany Salmon stole the puck and scored shorthanded with 6:01 left in the period, giving the Tigers a 4-2 lead.
Princeton made it 5-2 midway through the second period when Kate Hession scored thanks to an assist from Alison Ralph.
St. Lawrence outshot the Tigers 51-21, including 34-10 in the final two periods. St. Lawrence goalie Meaghan Guckian had 15 saves.
