Senior-Laden Cornell Volleyball Squad Claims Ivy Title With Home Sweep Of Princeton
November 11, 2006 | Women's Volleyball
Playing in front of a packed house at Newman Arena, and with its third straight Ivy League title in its grasp, the senior-laden Cornell women's volleyball team swept a young Princeton squad in three games to clinch the 2006 title and an NCAA tournament berth. Princeton fell to 19-3 overall, 10-3 in the league, and can clinch second-place with a win Wednesday night at home against Penn.
Princeton held its own in each game, but the experienced Big Red won the key points at opportune times. Cornell took the match with wins of 30-24, 30-26 and 32-30.
"We played well, but they just played better," assistant coach Sabrina King said afterwards. "They blocked a lot of shots and played good defense overall. We didn't play poorly, but they deserved it."
With five sophomores and one freshman in the starting lineup, Princeton will be a force to be reckoned with in the future, but the present belonged to Cornell's Elizabeth Bishop and the rest of her senior classmates. Bishop had 15 kills for Cornell, tying her with Princeton's Lindsey Ensign for a match high. Sophomore Parker Henritze added 14 kills and 21 digs, while classmate Bailey Robinson added 44 assists. Cornell had 12 blocks in the match and allowed Princeton to hit only .145 overall.
