Soccer's Matheson Named to Canada's Gold Cup Roster, Games to be Televised Nationally
November 20, 2006 | Women's Soccer
OTTAWA, Ontario, Canada -- CanadaSoccer has announced the women's national team roster for the 2006 CONCACAF Gold Cup to take place Wednesday and Sunday in Carson, Calif., and Princeton junior midfielder Diana Matheson is one of 22 on the team.
Matheson is a three-time First-Team All-Ivy player and a 2004 NSCAA First-Team All-American and led Princeton with eight goals and five assists this year for 21 points. Those totals came despite Matheson playing just 11 games while missing five due to her national team commitments. She has played in 53 national team games and recently finished the Peace Cup in Korea as the Canadians took second.
The two Gold Cup finalist teams will earn automatic berths in the 2007 Women's World Cup in China. Canada will start out the Gold Cup tournament against either Panama or Jamaica in the semifinal Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET, 4:30 local time in California. The matches can be seen live on Fox Soccer Channel, available on satellite and some cable system including Princeton's on-campus network as well as Rogers SportsNet in Canada. Having qualified for the last two Women's World Cups, the Canadians posted a high finish of fourth in the most recent event in 2003.
