Dartmouth Ends Princeton Unbeaten Streak at 10
November 24, 2006 | Women's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Sixth-ranked Dartmouth used power-play goals late in the second period and early in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and lead the Big Green to a 6-3 win over the eighth-ranked Princeton women's hockey team on Friday night at Baker Rink. The loss snapped Princeton's 10-game unbeaten streak.
Dartmouth opened the scoring 2:30 into the game when Cherie Piper skated into the Tiger zone. Piper took a shot that was saved by Princeton sophomore goaltender Kristen Young, but Young came off the post after the initial save and Piper was able to push the rebound over the goal line. Dartmouth made the score 2-0 1:33 later when Jenna Cunningham scored her first of three goals in the game. Dartmouth won an offensive zone face-off and Cunningham deflected Julia Bronson's point shot to give her team a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.
Princeton cut the lead in half just before the midway point of the period when sophomore Annie Greenwood tallied her third goal of the season. Freshman Maddie Endicott played the puck up into the Dartmouth zone and Greenwood and junior Marykate Oakley played a give-and-go that ended up with Greenwood's goal.
Princeton evened the score 33 seconds into the second period as the Tigers took advantage of Dartmouth goaltender Carli Clemis' loss stick and evened the score 2-2. Senior Dina McCumber played the puck to Pearce in the neutral zone who skated in on Clemis, who was not in position as she looked for her stick and failed to cover the near post. Pearce's goal was her sixth of the season.
Princeton controlled play for much of the second period, outshooting Dartmouth 12-5 in the period, but was unable to score.
Cunningham scored her second and third goals on the power play to put the Big Green ahead for good in the game. The first came at 15:06 of the second period when Piper found her along the goal line and she directed the pass by Young. The second goal was less conventional as Gillian Apps shot was saved by Young, but the rebound bounced up and off the body of Cunningham and into the Tiger goal. Apps gave Dartmouth a 5-2 lead at 12:28 on a semi-breakaway.
Princeton moved back within two goals at 18:20 when Oakley scored her ninth goal of the season with the Tigers skating with a two-player advantage. Pearce and senior Laura Watt worked the puck point-to-point before feeding it low to Oakley for the goal.
Dartmouth closed the scoring at 19:14 when Piper scored a shorthanded empty netter with 46 seconds remaining.
Clemis made 25 saves for the win, while Young stopped 17 shots in the loss. Junior Rebecca Allen made two saves in relief of her.
The Tigers fall to 8-1-2 with the loss while Dartmouth is now 8-3-0. Princeton hosts seventh-ranked Harvard tomorrow at 4 p.m.
