Tigers Rally to Tie 15th-Ranked Dartmouth
November 24, 2006 | Men's Ice Hockey
HANOVER, N.H. – The Princeton men's hockey team rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 to forge a 3-3 tie at No. 15 Dartmouth Friday night at Thompson Arena. Senior Max Cousins assisted on Princeton's second goal and scored the game-tying goal for the Tigers.
The Big Green jumped on the board with two goals in the first period. Nick Johnson opened the scoring at 12:58 after being set up by T.J. Galiardi and David Jones. A goal from Jones with five seconds left in the period gave Dartmouth a 2-0 lead.
Princeton cut the Dartmouth lead in half 4:44 into the second period when the senior Darroll Powe scored his fourth goal of the season from sophomore Lee Jubinville and senior Kevin Westgarth. The assist extended Jubinville's point-scoring streak to seven games, while Powe has points in his last five.
Dartmouth quickly regained the two-goal margin however as Jon Grecu scored 20 seconds later to make the score 3-1 Dartmouth.
Princeton controlled play for much of the second period and moved back within a goal at 15:54 when sophomore Brandan Kushniruk tallied his first goal of the season from Cousins.
Princeton drew even with the third period's only goal midway through the period. Cousins' goal, his first of the season, came with assists from sophomore Brett Wilson and junior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller.
Cousins' goal snapped a 42-game goalless streak for the senior and tonight marked the first multiple-point game of his career.
Both teams had several chances in overtime. Princeton had what was seemingly the game winner but the goal was waved off as the net had come off its moorings. Both teams were unable to score a power play goal as the Tigers went 0-6 and Dartmouth was 0-2. Princeton finished with 28 shots to Dartmouth's 19.
Freshman Zane Kalemba made 16 saves for Princeton while Mike Devine made 25 in the Dartmouth goal.
Princeton continues its weekend road trip tomorrow night at Dartmouth.
