Matheson's Team Canada Falls to U.S. in Gold Cup Final
November 27, 2006 | Women's Soccer
CARSON, Calif. -- Princeton junior Diana Matheson played all 90 minutes in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final Sunday night at the Home Depot Center in Southern California, but a penalty kick goal in added time of the second overtime by Kristine Lilly lifted the United States over Matheson's Canadian team, 2-1.
CONCACAF, the governing body of international soccer in North and Central America, has two berths in the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup, putting both the U.S. and Canada in next fall's field. Canada clinched its berth with a 4-0 win over Jamaica in the Gold Cup semifinal Nov. 22. The tournament will be played in China, Sept. 10-30, with the 16-team draw to take place April 22.
The American team has long been a tough opponent for the Canadians as the U.S. extended its unbeaten streak to 34 matches with Sunday's win. Hours before Matheson's Princeton teammates topped Penn to close the regular season Nov. 4, Matheson was in South Korea battling the U.S. to a 1-0 defeat in the Peace Queen Cup.
Despite missing five of Princeton's 16 games for her national team commitments, Matheson led Princeton with eight goals and five assists to total 21 points and earn unanimous First-Team All-Ivy honors. She has been so honored all three years she has worn the Orange and Black and was named an NSCAA First-Team All-America in 2004 when the Tigers were making their run to the NCAA College Cup national semifinal.
